What is Minecraft: The Exhibition?

Minecraft: The Exhibition was designed as a collaboration between Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture and the Swedish game developer Mojang. Created in partnership with Mojang, the exhibition celebrates the game’s 10th anniversary by exploring how Minecraft has developed into a platform for unlimited creative expression, community-crafting, and inspiration to build a better world outside of the game. Are you ready to build a better world? That’s the big idea behind Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. Minecraft fans will enjoy an immersive experience they’ve probably dreamed about: Stepping inside the world of the game, surrounded by blocky scenes and characters from Minecraft builds! Those who have not yet played can learn the fundamental skills and moves at game stations inside the gallery, then start building their own worlds. This massive exhibition celebrates creative expression, community crafting, and the quest to build a better world—both inside and outside the game.

Taking over four years to build, the immersive, experiential exhibition was designed to mark the 10th anniversary of the game’s public debut in 2009. The game has now sold more than 238 million copies and has some 140 million monthly active users.

Minecraft: The Exhibition is currently traveling around the world with Liberty Science Center being it’s first stop on a several-years-long world tour.

Everything You Need to Know Before Taking Kids to This Immersive New Minecraft Exhibit

The traveling exhibition, which spans over 6,000 square feet, features scenes, patterns, colors, and textures inspired by in-game biomes and player-built structures. Visitors – fans and non-fans alike – will appreciate the day-to-night lighting cycle, dynamic audio effects, and gallery score, all bringing the Minecraft universe to life.

The exhibition, which runs through September at Liberty Science Center, includes 15 life-size Minecraft characters, called “mobs,” including the explosive Creeper, Steve, Enderman, and Zombie. Along with these life-size characters, the exhibition features several dioramas featuring Minecraft biomes, giant trees, flying overhead Phantoms, scrambling chickens, and baby pandas playing in a bamboo forest.

Those who have not yet played can learn the fundamental skills and moves at game stations inside the gallery, then start building their own worlds. Videos showing time-lapse builds and veteran players at work will help turn newcomers into Minecraft experts!

Moreover, at a crafting table, players can use tiles that represent building materials from the game—such as wood, iron, and obsidian—to make their own objects and tools.

This massive exhibition celebrates creative expression, community crafting, and the quest to build a better world—both inside and outside the game, according to Liberty Science Center President and CEO Paul Hoffman.

“What I love about Minecraft is that it has inspired a generation of creative thinkers, while teaching engineering, chemistry, computer science, and other science and math-related skills, as well as collaboration and community-building,” he said. Noting that this reflects the very mission of the Center, he added, “We are super excited to be the first stop on the exhibition’s world tour, and we invite fans and newcomers to join us to celebrate the game’s international community and popularity – while getting a little STEM education in the process.”

Want to Learn Even More About Minecraft: The Exhibition

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into building an exhibition like this, check out this behind the scenes video below. It showcases how the Museum of Pop Culture built this incredible exhibition which Minecraft fans of all ages are sure to love!

Why Should I Take My Kids to See Minecraft: The Exhibition

It doesn’t matter if you’re not yet an avid fan of Minecraft, this exhibit is sure to teach you everything you need to know about Minecraft and it’ll surely make you a fan. Like most kids, my 13 year old son is really into playing Minecraft. He’s been playing since he was 6. At first, part of my wondered if he was a bit too passionate about this game. Honestly, I didn’t actually understand the game much and it wasn’t until I started attending Minecraft events and playing Minecraft online with him that I began to better understand why kids are fascinated by this video game. Heck, I even discovered that playing it comes with an entire list of benefits and kids can learn so much from Minecraft. I tell you this to say that if your kid is as passionate about Minecraft as mine is (and I’m sure that’s probably the case or you wouldn’t be here reading this post), you have to get onboard because Minecraft is not going away!

Lucky for you, there’s no better way to join the game than to check out Minecraft: The Exhibition. The Minecraft Exhibit World Tour kicks of in New Jersey but will be taking the entire world by storm as it travels to various locations in the years ahead. The exhibit does a fantastic job of bringing the Minecraft virtual world to life, not just for kids, but for parents too!
